Air Travel: Pros and Cons

March 30, 2009 By: Tristan Category: Misc No Comments →

Advantages and Disadvantages of Air Travel

The popularity of air travel has been increasing in the past few decades.  Air travel is convenient and safe and these are the main reasons that have contributed to the increase in popularity of air travel.  The following are some of the positive and negative factors involving air travel.

Disadvantage: Airplanes Cause Pollution.

The biggest drawback for traveling by air is the pollution.  Greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere by the aero planes and these gases are responsible for global warming. Global warming increases the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and people who want to avoid such a rise in temperature are alarmed by this effect.  Nowadays many airlines are taking necessary actions to reduce the global warming effect by becoming more conscious about the environment. One of the ways in which you could do this is by retrofitting winglet on the aircraft that makes the aircraft fuel efficient. Airlines also spend millions of dollars upgrading their fleets to newer and more efficient aircraft.

Disadvantage: High Cost

People refrain from traveling by air because of the high cost of air travel. It is cheaper to fill up gas in your car and drive to your desired destination instead of going by flight. You can take advantage of discount
airline travel
to obviate the high cost of travel by air. Ultimate decision for flying or driving is dependent on whether you get a good deal on the airfare or not.

Disadvantage: Fear of Flying

There are a number of people who just don’t want to fly.  This is mainly because of the fact that they were on a flight that has experienced extreme turbulence or some type of other event and this has been rather terrifying.

Advantage: Speed of Travel

traveling by air is much faster as compared to other means of transportation as long as these places are connected by air. Driving in United States between places could take you a number of days whereas you could cover this distance in a few hours by flight. This gives you extra days for enjoying your vacations because you save a number of days by traveling by air.

Advantage: Easy to Travel Long Distances

Another major advantage in traveling by air is that you can travel to far off destinations which are difficult to traverse either by road or any other means.  We can fly to any destination around the world. Flying to far off destinations takes longer duration; however they are still shorter than the time taken if you had to rely on alternative modes of transportation.

Advantage:  Safety

With regards to other forms of travel, air travel is considered to be one of the safest.  Car accidents wherein people die happen in thousands every year. Even train derailments causing deaths are also being heard of very frequently. As regards to air travel related accidents you will find that the frequency of occurrences is relatively minimal. For many people this makes it an easy decision to choose air travel over any other form of transportation.

Choosing air travel is a personal decision, based on the factors discussed above along with a multitude factors not discussed here.  For most travelers safety, speed of travel and cost are the over riding factors.  As long as cost remains affordable air travel will continue to grow in popularity.

Airfare Travel Deals

March 26, 2009 By: Tristan Category: Misc No Comments →

Among people who travel a lot, airfare deals appear to be a common conversational topic among those who want the best price and who want to travel at the best possible time.Ticket prices appear to fluctuate significantly in different parts of the World, but it’s possible to fly to most locations for considerably less than the full standard fare, with the aid of a good travel agent and some research.

The key difference when it comes to getting good deals is the adaptability of the traveler. Your flexibility and willingness to compromise on the day and time of year you travel will almost always get you a cheap seat.Airlines want to save money by slotting people into empty seats, and you can capitalize off this if you are able to modify your dates to suit theirs. However, with most airlines, if you decide to switch your travel date after you have booked a flight, you will incur a hefty cancellation of amendment penalty. A good point to remember about being flexible while looking at flights is that if you want to cancel or change a flight without receiving added charges, it might be more sensible to pay the regular fare.

The frequent flyer usually makes the biggest gains in the competitive world of airlines and airfare deals. The frequent flyer program is designed as a thank you for good customers because of their loyalty. People earn points or bonuses every time that they fly on certain carriers and redeem and receive free tickets or other compensations.Fierce competition has seen several airlines adopt the design or to unite with other airlines; several hotels are following the airlines’ path.

The most used source for deals in airfare is online. These may be genuinely legitimate enterprises, but it is better to book with more well-known discount agents. Mostly, the problem is that people fail in verifying a site’s legitimacy until it is too late.If you are unable to make a visit to an agent’s office, make a call to learn what he or she knows pertaining to the industry; never rely on email contact alone. Question to find out if there are any likely snags related to their ticket deals, like a stopover at a non-attractive part of the world. Make sure that you know exactly which airline you are flying on, that’s very important information.

Airfare deals and options are opening up daily with new destinations and more flexible rates. Consequently, with careful research, a flexible attitude and airline options, you will eventually get to your destination unperturbed.

Ten Vacation Packing Tips

March 21, 2009 By: Tristan Category: Misc No Comments →

The vacation packing tips that follow are based on experience - both good and bad. My wife and I have done enough things right, and enough wrong to have something to teach about travel. The last time we traveled together to Ecuador, we went with carry-on luggage only - a ten-pound pack each. This was one of the things we did right, and is tip number one.

1. Go light. It is simpler, especially if you are traveling by air and you can keep it to just carry-on. A few weeks ago we spent almost two hours waiting for a relative’s suitcase to show up on the Luggage carousel at Denver International Airport. At least it finally showed up, but if you can do just carry-on, you leave all problems of late or lost luggage behind, and travel more easily.

2. Have all you essentials in your carry-on bag. If your other luggage is lost, you should have what you need to stay clean and comfortable with you.

3. Budget a little extra and buy things as you go. Don’t carry 20 extra things for the five that you’ll end up using. You’ll find that this is more practical and relaxing than over-planning a vacation and over-weighting the luggage.

4. Valuables like jewelry are almost never covered by the luggage insurance the airline provides. Be sure to pack these items in your carry-on bag. We learned this one the hard way.

5. When packing shampoo, perfume, skin cream and other liquids, be careful. The cargo areas of planes are not pressurized fully, so the tops can pop off of bottles and other containers. To really be safe, pack such items in a sealed plastic bag.

6. Don’t pack things too tight. Your luggage may be opened and inspected, and the security officials may not know how to fit it all back in.

7. Important documents, like passports and identification, should never be packed in your luggage. Carry them on your person, preferably in a hidden pocket or security pouch under your shirt.

8. Have a good packing routine. For example, start by making a list of items you’ll need based on every circumstance you may be in during your vacation. Then consider each item, and remove any that aren’t likely to be used - especially if they can be easily obtained at your destination.

9. Check the weather forecast for your travel destinations before packing. You might need a raincoat, or a down coat, or (even better) shorts or a swimsuit. It is easy to get a forecast online now for anywhere in the world.

10. Write these packing tips and others down, and keep the list handy for each time you take a vacation.

Dirt Cheap Airfare

March 20, 2009 By: Tristan Category: Misc No Comments →

In this age of high travel costs people are constantly in search of dirt cheap airfare.  Business and vacation travelers try to save money.  Read on for some tips and tricks on how to cut your airfare costs.

dirt cheap airfare

Airlines now charge travelers for almost everything.  Many now charge a fee for a second checked bag.  They even charge for the first bag.  Window and aisle seats add a charge.  This made it ever more important to find a dirt cheap airfare in the first place.  All the charges bring a low fare up to where a normal fare was in the past.

The day of the dirt cheap airfare is not ended.  Realize that the high prices continued even after airlines no longer had to pay a lot for jet fuel.  Once a company or industry makes consumers accustomed to a certain type of charge or fee it’s very unlikely that they’ll ever remove it.  That’s how business works.

The reasons for the extra fees are known.  We know there are ways to find a dirt cheap airfare.  But how?  The Internet is there to help.  There are many travel sites where flights from many different airlines can be searched and compared.  These will often result in finding the best or lowest airfare.

dirt cheap airline tickets

A dirt cheap airfare could be found on the airlines’ own websites.  They often include specials they don’t post to third party sites.  So don’t limit the search to the travel sites.  Become a member of each one, and make sure to sign up for their frequent flyer programs as well.

Many people make the mistake of only flying with one airline.  They believe it’s a path to receiving dirt cheap airfare.  That’s not true.  Comparison results in savings for every trip.  Some people like to feel special.  In that case stick with one airline.

Stay away from auction sites if you want dirt cheap airfare.  The secret of auctions is that people pay more than retail over 50% of the time.

The dirt cheap airfare is out there.  Shop around to find it.

Parking at Gatwick Airport

March 17, 2009 By: Tristan Category: Misc No Comments →

It can be very confusing to both find and book car parking space at the UK’s second busiest airport. Where can you go to get accurate parking price information? Do you need long term or short term parking? What are the key differences between the various car parks? These are the questions that I hope to answer in this brief article.

You may not be aware that Gatwick is the UK’s second busiest airport and the sixth busiest in the world. With over 32 million passengers using the airport each year it’s not surprising to find that the airport provides extensive car parking facilities.

You will probably want to use short term parking when dropping people off and picking them up from the airport. This is also adequate for most short duration journeys. Multi-storey short term parking is available at both the North and South terminals.

You are warned not to leave your car unattended for any length of time in the forecourt areas outside the passenger terminals. If you do your car will be removed by the vigilant airport security staff and you will have to pay a hefty release fee to get it back. If you need to leave your car unattended you should always park in the car parks provided.

If your trip lasts more than just a few days then Gatwick long term parking is recommended. There are numerous options to choose from when considering long term parking at Gatwick, which can be a little bewildering.

It is worthwhile looking at the details of the various long stay car parks servicing Gatwick airport to make certain they meet your requirements. Most airport car parks provide excellent security facilities including fencing, security cameras and regular patrols. Some outstanding car parks have the ‘park mark’ safer parking award. All provide free bus transfer between the car park and the airport terminal, but it is worthwhile checking the frequency of the bus service and how long it takes to transfer.

Meet and greet parking is what you need if bus transfers are too much hassle or if you want to save a little time. All you need do is drive directly to your airport terminal where the pre-arranged chauffeur will meet you. They will take your car and park it on your behalf in one of the secure long term car parks. When you return from your trip your car will have been retrieved from the car park to be ready and waiting for you as soon as you have cleared customs.

The benefits provided by meet and greet parking are that you don’t need to arrive at the airport very early as you don’t need to take a transfer bus from the car park and you will be on your way home as soon as you leave the airport terminal. You can also get take advantage of the valet service to have your car cleaned while you are away.

To get the best Gatwick parking rate it is essential that you book in advance. Usually, the further in advance you book your parking the better the price. The best way to check on prices and availability is to use an online price checking and comparison facility such as the one provided by Gosimply.com. This excellent website not only provides accurate and up to date parking prices and availability information it also provides honest and impartial customer reviews of various airport facilities, including airport hotels.

The good news is that some of the top travel sites have 24-hour support lines you can call at anytime and get help from a customer support representative. If you have trouble booking your flight or vacation package, these agents are also available to help you along. Once you are familiar with the system, chances are that you won’t need to speak to anyone, but it’s nice to know that help from a human is available if you need it.

Tips For Booking Hotels At The Last Minute

March 14, 2009 By: Tristan Category: Misc No Comments →

Whether you’re doing it intentionally or it’s just an unfortunate twist of circumstances, traveling at the last minute can be nerve-wracking. That is, if you come with an unprepared mindset. Since traveling unprepared can sometimes give you trouble regarding hotel bookings, here are tips on how you could land a place to stay even if you’re making travel plans at the last minute:

Look for hotels at local websites.
Websites offering tips and last minute booking deals abound but not many of them can be very helpful if you’re trying to actually get accommodated. Instead of using websites that cater to a national or even international crowd, consider using local websites. These sites oven offer better (read: better) listings of hotels if you’re traveling last minute. Global sites are often simply too expansive to actually give you the good deals.

Use multiple sites.
It’s rare to find last minute hotel bookings that offer reasonable prices in only one site. Use several different sites so you can compare. You might even come across really great deals – terrific if you’re traveling on a budget.

Always give preference to a local travel agent.
Don’t rely too much on your trusty travel agent. Even they sometimes don’t get to help in terms of last minutehotel bookings during your travels. Instead, look up travel agencies in the locality where you’re traveling to. You could probably find them online, at tourism websites or online yellow pages.

These local travel agencies have a better access on the actual availability of hotel rooms in their area. They should – they’re located there. Call them up or send an e-mail to inquire.

Ask the local tourism office.
If you’re traveling to a popular destination, they usually have local tourism offices that you can turn to for assistance. It’s the local government’s way to show hospitality in order to encourage tourists to come visit. If you need booking for last minute hotels for your travel, try checking those in charge of local tours. They could guide you in finding a nice, safe place to stay for the duration of your trip.

An advantage here is that not many people do this often – they prefer the more beaten path of calling hotels, airlines and travel agencies. And since you’ll be talking with the tourism office, you might want to get a few tips on finding the best hotels where you could experience the local flavors and offerings of your destination.

Check offers from low cost airlines.
Many low cost airlines have affiliated hotels. These range from 4 to 5 star hotels to more simple accommodations courtesy of inns and hostels. You might want to check their websites for availability in case you’re traveling any time soon. Many of these affiliated hotels can accept last minute bookings. An advantage: if you use the low cost airline for travel, you get all the information you need including hotel bookings from only one website.

Check out package tours.
Sometimes, last minute hotel booking problems can be solved by simply checking out bundled tours. Few airlines like major carriers might offer package tours inclusive of car rentals with the accommodations charge of hotel.

If you book a flight with any of these airlines, you could take advantage of their offers, get an airplane ticket, book a last minute hotel room and even have a car pick you up from and to the airport.
